How To Avoid Germs at Work and School

Cold and flu season is upon us, and with it comes thoughts of germs and how to avoid them. While we here at Lakeview Immediate Care make it easy for you to get help when you are sick, we would much rather help you stay healthy from the start. Unfortunately, if you are heading into the office or send the kids to school, you are going to be surrounded by germs. Here are some tips to help you stay healthy at work or school this cold and flu season.

Wash Your Hands

One of the most important ways you can stay healthy and germ-free is to wash your hands. Proper hand washing before eating, after coughing, blowing your nose or sneezing, or after coming home from school or the office, can go quite far in preventing the spread of germs and bacteria. Here are some tips to help ensure your hand washing is done properly:

  • Use soap and hot water
  • Wet your hands before applying soap
  • Lather the soap well
  • Wash for at least 20 seconds, scrubbing all surfaces
  • Rinse under clean, warm water.

Only use alcohol-based sanitizing products when washing is not available. Sanitizers are not as effective at eliminating germs on hands, because they rarely reach all of the hands’ surfaces. Teach kids the importance of hand washing and good hand hygiene as well, and you will enjoy a germ-free family.

Cover Your Cough

If you have a cough or cold, cover your mouth with the nook of your elbow when you must cough or sneeze. While this won’t prevent you from getting sick, it will help stop the spread of germs in your workplace or classroom. If you notice others coughing around you, politely ask them to cover.

Get Vaccinated

Many types of viruses can be prevented through proper vaccination, including influenza. Make sure your family is up to date on vaccinations, and contact Lakeview Immediate Care during flu season for your flu shot. With timely vaccinations, you may be able to avoid getting sick!

Get Medical Attention Quickly

In winter, many viruses and bacteria spread quickly as people move indoors to confined environments. Whether you are struggling with the flu, bronchitis, strep throat, a stomach virus or a sinus infection, getting medical attention quickly can help you get on the road to recovery as fast as possible; while also helping prevent the spread of germs. Also, if you are dealing with a cough, prompt medical attention can help prevent the development of pneumonia. At Lakeview Immediate Care, we offer a comprehensive list of treatment options for a wide range of fall and winter ailments.
